If a camera faces bright sunlight, misses the approach to an entrance, or records faces from the wrong angle, it may provide little usable evidence when an incident occurs. Knowing how to choose CCTV placement means planning around real business risks, not simply filling walls with cameras.

For offices, warehouses, retail spaces, associations, and shared facilities, the right layout should help management see what matters, investigate incidents quickly, and protect people and property without disrupting daily operations. Placement decisions also affect network capacity, storage requirements, installation cost, and long-term maintenance.

Start With the Risks You Need to Manage

Before selecting camera locations, identify what you need the system to accomplish. A CCTV plan for a small office will differ from one for a warehouse, a customer-facing reception area, or a member-driven organization with frequent visitor access.

Walk through the property as a visitor, employee, delivery driver, and potential intruder would. Look for the routes each person uses, the areas where valuables are handled, and the locations where an incident would be difficult to explain without video. This exercise usually reveals gaps that a floor plan alone will not show.

Common priorities include monitoring main entrances and exits, recording visitor movement, protecting stock rooms and server rooms, overseeing cash-handling points, and covering parking areas or loading bays. One placed too low may be easier to tamper with.

Height is a trade-off. In many indoor areas, mounting cameras high enough to prevent casual interference while keeping facial detail is the right balance. The exact height depends on the lens, the area being covered, and whether identification or general monitoring is the objective.
